Conference Background
Mountain landscapes with intricate human-environment systems are known to show signs of diverse
vulnerability to the present fundamental shift in the Earth System, mainly driven by anthropogenic
activities. Mountain ecosystems are being paid greater attention in national and international debates
due
to their myriad of services such as fresh water, fertile soil and rich bioresources and the cascading
effects
of a climate change on humankind. The Himalayan region, is well-known for its magnificent landscapes
and rich biodiversity, and is undergoing rapid transformations at an unprecedented rate due to warming
climate. Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) is home to two global biodiversity hotspots and faces the brunt
of
climate change, with temperatures expected to rise significantly in some parts by 2100. It will
adversely
affect the ecosystem services of the region via shrinking of water resources, land use/cover change,
change in ecosystems, biodiversity loss and human well being. It is very vital for the IHR to learn to
adapt
and build resilience to global warming. Hence, there is a need for developing mountain specific decision
support systems by generating knowledge and information on mountain landscapes, biodiversity,
indigenous knowledge and environmental change related impacts for making informed decisions by
policy makers and administrative agencies. Recognizing the urgent need to build climate change resilient
mountain ecosystems, this national conference is anticipated to be instrumental in exchanging
knowledge and promoting networking among eminent scientists, faculty members, policy makers,
researchers for achieving mountain ecosystems sustainability
